As one of the first witness of the story of French wines, the Rhône valley produces wines for about 2000 years. A wine grower from Châteauneuf du Pape, the Le Roy Baron, was the one behind the creation of the AOC label in 1933. This certification was made in order to guarantee the geographic origin of a wine and the quality of its production. The AOP is the European equivalent.
Produced in the second vastest French vineyard, the Côtes-du-Rhône has a strong identity and is quite well-known worldwide. The 75 000 ha of vineyard of this area go from Vienne, at the north of the Rhône valley to Avignon at the south. The region have many variety of type of soils highly brighten up by the sun and soflty swept by the wind from the Massif Central and the Alps.
With about 460 million bottles produced, the Côtes-du-Rhônes wines are made from many grape varieties as the Grenache noir, the Mouvèdre and Syrah for red wines. The most known are the Châteauneuf du Pape, the Hermitage, the Saint-Joseph and the Côtes-du-Rhône villages.
